THE CITY WE NEED

Urbanitas is the Rome Urban Thinkers Campus organized by Open City Roma and Ordine degli Architetti PPC di Roma e Provincia.

It is a two-day conferences and workshops event for a sustainable, resilient and active city, that will involve institutions, research organizations, companies, citizens, national and international stakeholders in order to promote the debate on the future of European cities according to the New Urban Agenda and The City We Need principles.

Historical European metropolis face challenges related to economic changes and globalization, like industrial relocation and transition to knowledge economy, mass tourism and gentrification, phenomena of multiculturalism related conflicts, low urban quality and segregation of peripheries, waste and smog production. All these issues are strongly undermining the traditional life-quality of the European cities, causing social segregation, poverty and health problems in urban population. The Campus will focus on the Rome case-study, which is very significant both for the symbolic meaning of the Eternal City in the western urban culture and for the important opportunities as well as challenges due to its complexity. The UTC will develop concrete proposals in six specific thematic areas: governance and commons, co-design, creative districts, sustainable tourism, soft mobility and circular economy.

The Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC) model is an initiative of UN-Habitat’s World Urban Campaign, conceived in 2014 as an open space for critical exchange between all stakeholders and partners aims to promote sustainable urbanization. It is also envisaged as a platform to advocate enlightened planning and design of our cities and propose urban solutions in addressing urbanization challenges to urban futures. The World Urban Campaign (WUC) is an advocacy and partnership platform to raise awareness about positive urban change in order to achieve green, productive, safe, healthy, inclusive, and well planned cities. Its goal is to place the Urban Agenda at the highest level in development policies. It is coordinated by UN-Habitat and driven by a large number of committed partners - currently more than 180 partners and networks - from around the world.
